St. Anne’s University Hospital Brno is an institution that has existed for more than 220 years. The hospital was established by the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II in 1784 as an imperial royal general provisory care institute and it initiated operation in 1786. The oldest building was constructed in 1868 and it is built according to the design of the great Viennese architect Theophil Hansen. Construction of additional buildings took place with the development of the hospital. In 1919, after the establishment of the Masaryk University, the hospital became a University Hospital and it has been used for education and training of medical students.

St. Anne’s University Hospital Brno combines tradition with the current trends. It takes the advantage of state-of-the-art methods of therapy and the newest knowledge of medical specialties; several unique therapeutic procedures have generated interest abroad too. All the clinics and departments provide care in the particular specialty to the inhabitants of Brno as well as people from within the region of South Moravia or in same cases even to the patients from all over the country.

The hospital specializes mainly in cardiovascular issues, oncosurgery and oncology, intensive care medicine, minimal invasive methods in medicine, neurosciences – neurology and neurosurgery and additional special programmes for diagnostics and therapy.
Within the hospital, there is a wide range of courses – from the medical students from Masaryk University, to training of nursery staff in several nursery schools in Brno, up to post-graduate education for physicians in many specialties.
The clinics develop co-operation with many international workplaces. Currently the building of the International Clinical Research Centre (ICRC) is being constructed within the hospital, which is a result of cooperation between the St. Anne’s University Hospital Brno and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, USA.

The individual buildings in the premises are constructed so that they comply with the great requirements of current medical practice. Surgical theatres of each clinic have been equipped with the most up-to-date technology currently available, which enables the team of skilled specialists to perform highly specialised procedures and develop demanding programmes of diagnostic and therapeutic care. There are top diagnostic and therapeutic devices, e.g. the da Vinci surgical robotic system (one of only three in the Czech Republic), excimer laser, magnetic resonance imaging, computer tomography, a radiology workplace equipped with fully digital skiagraphy devices, etc.
