Blood donors

Why donate?

Up to 80 % of people need a blood transfusion or blood products during their lifetime, and blood and its components cannot be synthetically replaced. Donors are indispensable. Yet there is currently a shortage of 70.000 donors in the Czech Republic.

Our donor collection center is part of the Transfusion Department, whose main task is to provide safe transfusion products for patients not only at St. Anne’s University Hospital in Brno.

If you come to donate, you can help save up to four lives.

You can also register for donation by phone at +420 543 182 190 (between 6:15 and 9:30 AM).

Before you sign up, please review the general criteria for blood donation, temporary restrictions, and the current status of blood supplies.

Thank you for your help!

On behalf of the blood donation center team MUDr. Jarmila Brůnová Celerová
Head of the Transfusion Department

Blood plasma is the liquid component of blood, containing mainly proteins, minerals and enzymes. In addition to the function of a liquid environment for blood cells, it also performs a number of other tasks, for example, in the transfer of absorbed nutrients, stopping bleeding and ensuring immunity.

Plasma obtained from blood donations and plasmapheresis is used for clinical use for patients with bleeding symptoms, circulatory shock, liver failure, burns, or for the production of concentrates for stopping bleeding, immunoglobulins and vaccines.

Plasmapheresis is the collection of blood plasma carried out using special devices – separators, when blood plasma is separated from blood cells and they are transferred back to the donor’s bloodstream. The collected plasma can be used to treat patients or as an irreplaceable raw material in the pharmaceutical industry in the production of a wide range of drugs.

Blood donation in the Czech Republic is unpaid, which means that donors do not receive financial compensation – they donate blood voluntarily and without any entitlement to remuneration. This approach is in line with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), according to which unpaid donation is the safest and most reliable form of blood collection.

When rewarding blood plasma donors, we follow the same principles as blood donors. Voluntary, unpaid donation increases the safety of our patients who receive plasma as part of their treatment.

However, donors still receive some benefits:

  • a day off from work on the day of collection
  • a certificate of unpaid blood donation for tax purposes (a discount of CZK 3,000 per donation)
  • refreshments after collection – a voucher worth CZK 200 (plasma donors CZK 300) can be used at the Bistro at St. Anne’s;
  • benefits from health insurance companies.

Thanks to the support of our partners, we can offer additional small benefits.

  • fruit at the collection center from Hortim;
  • gift voucher to Optika Valore for a professional eye examination and purchase of prescription glasses;
  • 1+1 free admission to the cryochamber at the Náskok recreation studio;
  • more than 50% discount on admission to the Aqua zone at Aqualand Moravia. The discounted price also applies to accompanying persons (1 person);
  • 1+1 free admission to the 4Comfort wellness center in Obřany, Brno;
  • Free admission to the VIDA! Science Center. Valid for one month after donation upon presentation of donor ID or confirmation of donation.
  • 20% discount on purchases at FAnn perfumeries or at the e-shop www.fann.cz;
