History
St. Anne’s University Hospital Brno has a rich history dating back to the early 14th century, when a Dominican convent for women with the Church of St. Anne was founded on the site of today’s hospital complex. After its dissolution by Emperor Joseph II, a general almshouse was opened in the former convent buildings in 1786 – marking the beginning of the hospital’s history.
In the 19th century, the complex underwent extensive reconstruction based on the designs of architect Theophil Hansen. The hospital became a center of modern medicine and, since 1919, an important teaching base for the Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk University.
After World War II, some clinics were gradually relocated to the newly built campus in Bohunice. Since 1991, St. Anne’s University Hospital Brno has been an independent organization under the Ministry of Health.
