Gastroenterology and Hepatology Department

A separate Gastroenterology and Hepatology Department was established in the autumn of 2024 and its management was entrusted to Prof. Jan Martínek, who worked at IKEM in Prague before his arrival. Since then, a number of new specialised procedures have been introduced that were not previously performed at the hospital, and some are performed in only a few places in the Czech Republic or exclusively at FNUSA. Completely new procedures include POEM and G-POEM in the treatment of oesophageal achalasia and gastroparesis. Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) was also performed here for the first time to remove early tumours of the oesophagus and stomach. Another novelty is endosonographically guided drainage of pancreatic collections or the introduction of endoscopic sutures.

The department also continues to provide the standard care that patients are accustomed to, such as ERCP procedures, treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding, endoscopic resection of the colon, and preventive colon examinations.
