The Institute of Microbiology
The Institute of Microbiology provides a full range of microbiological examinations of various samples taken from patients in outpatient units, clinics, and departments of our and other contracted healthcare facilities (the Centre for Transplant and Cardiovascular Surgery in Brno, the Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute, and the Hospital of the Brothers of Mercy). The range of tests that are offered includes bacteriological, serological, virological, mycological, parasitological, and molecular biological methods. For bacteriological and mycological tests, we also provide targeted testing of the sensitivity/resistance of pathogens to antibiotics/antimycotics and targeted testing of virulence factors. The Antibiotic Centre provides consultation and advisory services in the field of antibiotic therapy and differential diagnosis of infectious diseases. When examining samples, a comprehensive approach to patients and their diseases is preferred. Since 2004, the FNUSA Microbiology Institute laboratories have been accredited by the Czech Accreditation Institute (ČIA) in accordance with the current version of the EN ISO 15189 standard for medical laboratories.
The Institute of Microbiology is a teaching facility of the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University, and the Secondary Medical School for the specialisation of Medical Laboratory Technician. The staff members of the Institute of Microbiology also participate in scientific research and are involved in a number of research projects, while others are involved in cooperation with other units and clinics. It is currently the leading institution in the Czech Republic comprehensively addressing the role of microbial biofilm and its properties in terms of basic research and the practical application of the knowledge gained in the prevention and treatment of biofilm infections.
